Professor Miles Groth PhD

Educated at Franklin and Marshall College, Duquesne University and Fordham University, Professor Groth has taught psychology and philosophy at St. Vincent College (Latrobe, Pennsylvania) and Wagner College (Staten Island, New York) where he was formerly full professor in the Department of Psychology. He is now Professor Emeritus in psychology at Wagner College. Originally trained as a psychoanalyst, he continues to practice as an existential therapist in Manhattan, New York.

He is author of a number of books, some of which include: Preparatory Thinking in Heidegger's Teaching (1987), The Voice that Thinks: Heidegger Studies (1997; rev. ed., 2016), and Translating Heidegger (2004), as well as a series of articles on existential analysis, several chapters in books on psychotherapy, and numerous articles in psychology and philosophy journals. He was formerly Co-founder and Chief Editor of New Male Studies: An International Journal.

Professor Groth has lectured and presented seminars for psychiatrists and clinical psychologists in Australia, Canada, Hungary, and the United States. Most recently his interest has been as a writer and educator in the developing field of Daseinsanalysis.

Dr John Ashfield PhD

Dr Ashfield is a bestselling author, known across Australia and internationally for his writing in the fields of applied psychology, mental health, and male psychology. He is author of six books, chapters in specialised textbooks, numerous mass media articles and commentary, published health promotion resources, and a number of academic articles.

Dr Ashfield has taught at the University of Adelaide, University of South Australia, Flinders University, and was a PhD examiner for the University of Southern Queensland. He was a pioneer of post-graduate clinical education in the psychology of palliative care, in the Department of General Practice, Faculty of Medicine, University of Adelaide, and has held a number of senior consultancy and clinical appointments in government and non-government sectors. He was the founder of the India Overseas Sharing Fund, a community aid and development organisation in Chennai, India.

Anthony Smith

Anthony Smith has established a national profile in Australian suicide prevention. He is the author of Default Depression (2023) and is the co-author of the ‘Situational Approach‘ papers on suicide prevention and mental health literacy.

Anthony has a long history of activity in a range of suicide prevention settings and has been a member of the board of Suicide Prevention Australia (SPA); he is currently employed with Adelaide University as a project researcher.

Anthony has authored and co-authored a number of papers and reports on men and suicide including the Preventing Male Suicide: Become Part of the Solution booklet; the research report 'Pathways to Despair: a study of male suicide (aged 25-44)' report and 'Men, Unemployment and Suicide' in the 2013 Mental Health Reform document 'Obsessive Hope Disorder'.
